About Us

Who are we...?

The business was originally started by Nigel’s Father Peter Hill and his brother Ron in Bedford in1950. Following a move to Aspley Guise in 1974, we maintained a shop there and in Harpur Street, Bedford, until Nigel took over the business in 1988. Nigel’s parents, Peter & Pearl moved to Oundle and opened ‘The Old Curiosity Shop’ and we took over as ‘Harpur’s’ in 2002.
The aim for the new business in Oundle was to provide a very different jewellery experience for the public. We tend to steer clear of the High Street norm and feature items by individual makers, either as one-offs or limited runs and we ourselves, of course, make our own jewellery and offer a full bespoke making service.
Nigel has an extensive collection of gem stones and will often buy a stone and create a piece around it. These one-offs have proved very popular.
We offer a full repair service and have recently equipped our workshop with the latest pulsed laser welding technology enabling us to carry out repairs with a precision our forebears could only dream of.

Nigel “The Boss”

Jeweller & drummer.  Also known as Ben” the Gretsch” Hill in the music world, unless he’s playing the Sonor kit! Available for making rings, playing drums and joke telling!

Tina “The real boss…”

Has worked with Nigel for many years now (feels like forever! T.) Apart from not making tea and coffee she does pretty much everything else. Buying silver, display work, book work, computer etc etc. The list would never end if Tina were writing this. Lucky old you!!!

Angela “The Chief”

Worked with Nigel for even more years and still here! She must be mad!!! Makes tea and coffee and generally looks after us all like old mother hen! Known for her caring attitude and endless patience, serves beautifully in the shop.

Rosalind “The apprentice”

Nigel’s daughter. Learning to be a jeweller, pearl stringer extraordinaire. Has recently been around the world as jeweller on P &O cruise ships. Now living the good life in Australia, Running a jewellery store.

Wendy aka “Wonder Woman” Very well known & liked locally,  Affectionally known as ‘Woof’, if you are lucky enough to be served by her you will find her friendly & very helpful. She also makes a pretty good cup of coffee & has fitted in beautifully with the ethos of the shop. (the above words of praise were paid for by Wendys husband!)
